In this SEMrush review, I’ll be testing the most popular SEO tools available.

I’ll discuss how it stacks up in terms of:

What is SEMrush?

Simply put, SEMrush is a product that helps you optimize your site for search engines. Founded in 2008 by Oleg

hchegolev and Dmitry Melnikov, it now has a large user base (over 5 million users, according to the company) and is

one of the most popular SEO tools available today.

SEMrush works by giving you a lot of information that you can use:

create new web content that can generate traffic

identify opportunities for link building

Modify the technical aspects of your site’s content to achieve higher search rankings.

For example, SEMrush can provide keyword suggestions (based on the terms you enter) that can be used as a basis

for writing blog posts that might perform well in search results.

You can also tell how difficult it will be to rank for specific search terms.

It also suggests websites that you might want to search for backlinks to.

This will allow you to run an “SEO audit” on your site to see if there are any technical improvements you can make to

help you get better search results.

However, this is only the beginning – SEMrush offers a number of other features designed to improve your site’s

position in search results. I analyze them in detail below, highlighting all of their pros and cons.

Let’s start with all of this by looking at a so-called domain analysis.

Domain Analysis

Most SEO projects start with a basic domain analysis. This means that we get a simple overview of the “quality” of

the domain from an SEO perspective.

You usually run a domain analysis on your own site to find out where SEO improvements can be made, or with a

competitor to find out how difficult it will be to outperform them in search results (or find a way).

You can also perform a domain scan on a site to see if it’s worth contacting its owner to get a link from their site to

search performance.

Domain analysis is very simple in SEMrush: just enter the URL of a domain in the “Domain overview” section and

you will immediately get an idea of ​​its performance in the search results.

The number of external links (backlinks) to your site

The number of keywords classified by the site

Among the above indicators, it is generally the “official score” which allows the fastest understanding of the quality

of the site.

SEMrush calculates this based on:

backlink data (number of links pointing to them)

organic search data, including organic search traffic and keyword positions on a blog.

The eligibility score was previously somewhat buried in the SEMrush interface, but has recently moved to the

beginning and middle of the domain preview section, so you can get a snapshot of what SEMrush thinks about. one

area in particular.

Now, when it comes to domain overview statistics, it’s important to note that while most of them are based on

reliable data, traffic data is an estimate and in my experience, they are not very precise.

(I’m basing this observation on comparing SEMRush traffic estimates with Google Analytics data for the sites I

access.)

Unlike SEMrush, the tool does not claim that the traffic data is 100% accurate and provides an estimate of the

accuracy of the traffic statistics for a given site (low, medium or high).

But it is worth noting that I found that his competitor, Ahrefs, performed a little better in terms of accuracy, at least

when I compare his traffic estimates with the Google Analytics data available to me. access (You can read the

It is best to treat SEMrush traffic statistics as an indication of your site’s popularity – and this can help you link your

site to your competitors or identify sites worth discussing for links.

Other SEMrush domain overview metrics are extremely useful and provide a very valuable insight into your own site

and others.

Of particular note is the “competitive map”, which allows you to see at a glance where a particular site fits into that

particular market and its strengths ahead of its competitors.

Country-by-country statistics are also useful. Use it to find out where in the world your site is.

Overall, the SEMrush domain review section is extremely useful, and only this aspect of the product provides a huge

insight into how a page works in terms of SEO.

Keyword research in SEMrush

Keyword research usually focuses on:

Determine how many people are looking for a particular keyword

Determine how difficult it is to rank for this keyword

Find out who is already ranked for this keyword

Ask for suggestions from others.

With SEMrush you can find the above information very easily.

All you have to do is enter a keyword in the Keyword Review tool and you will see it right away.

One of the most important metrics that comes back here is the result of the difficulty of the keyword. SEMRush uses

a percentage to indicate this – a higher percentage indicates that it will be harder to rank for a particular keyword.

To get keyword suggestions based on the term you entered, use the SEMrush Keyword Wizard option.

In terms of usability, it would be better to just call it “Keyword Suggestions” – “Keyword Magic” sounds a bit vague –

but if you get to this part of SEMrush, you will find its use very easy. .

Specifies a list of keywords related to the term, as well as filters that can be used for filtering, including:

difficulty with keywords

the number of monthly searches for each keyword in blog.

In general, the SEMrush Keyword Troubleshooter provides all the key information you need to decide which

keywords to include in your SEO project.

However, some improvements are feasible.

First of all, the data you provide only applies to Google searches – it would be better to have an index available for

some other search engines.

The truth is, the vast majority of searches are still done on Google (92% at the time of writing, according to

Statkaunter) – but there are areas, especially the United States, where other search engines are located. most used (in

the United States, for example, 7.2% of searches are currently conducted in Bingen). Competitive products like Moz

and Ahrefs allow access to this data.

Second, it would be good to get a notification from SEMrush about how many links you will need to rank for a

particular keyword. One of the best things about competitor Ahrefs product keyword research is that it tells you

exactly that – it would be great to see SEMrush follow suit.

SEMrush Marketing Toolkit

In addition to providing keyword research tools, SEMrush also provides a number of content marketing tools (as

long as you are a guru or above).

These allow you to:

identify new writing topics

review existing content from an SEO perspective

identify the keywords used by your competitors in your publications

follow your brand mentions.

My favorite feature in SEMrush Content Marketing Toolkit is Optimization Writing Assistant, which allows you to

copy and paste content into SEMrush for preview (you can also write a copy in SEMrush and get real-time

recommendations for it).

Once you’ve done that, you’ll get some tips on how to improve its performance in search results. These include

incentives to increase or decrease the number of words; advice when adding certain keywords to your text; and

warnings if your content appears to have been removed from other pages.

However, it would be nice if you could just paste in your page URL and get these tips – something to copy / paste is a

little tricky.

Rank monitoring

Ranking is the process of tracking your website’s performance in search engines for a given keyword over time.

It’s easy to set this up in SEMrush – go to its position tracking section, enter the domain name and keywords you

want to track, and get a report showing how your page currently ranks for those keywords. . As time passes and more

and more data on your page flows through SEMrush, you will be able to track the progress of your attempts to rank

higher for selected phrases.

You can also enter your competitor’s website data into the SEMrush position tracker, allowing you to compare

(again, over time) your website’s performance for the selected keywords. compared to those of your competitors.

Finally, you will receive periodic updates via e-mail on the progress of the rankings.

Overall, the ranking detection functionality in SEMrush is strong – there are no complaints.

Link analysis

The functioning of a page in the search results depends on the number of links (external pages that refer to it) for the

page in question.

There are two ways to view links in SEMRush: the first is to use its “comment analysis” option and the second is to

perform a “comment review”.

Let’s take a look at each .

SEMRush’s “Backlink Analytics” section allows you to enter a domain name and view a list of all the links you can

find there.

The accuracy of SEMrush’s comment analysis obviously depends on the size and quality of its link database. At the

time of writing, SEMrush claims to have 31.3 trillion links in its database, which, if true, would positively compare to

its competitors Majestic, which claims 9.3 trillion, and Ahrefs, which claims 26 billion.

(I have not found equivalent data for Moz).

If these numbers are correct, the SEMrush connection database becomes larger than that of the major competitors,

which means that in theory you should get more complete connection data from the tool.

However, I was curious to see how it performed in some real-world tests, so I checked six different websites to see

how some of the main tools work against each other in this area.

In my (albeit small) test, I found that the number of links found by each tool was quite similar, with SEMrush

performing better on websites with fewer domains linked to them, identifying more linking domains than its

competitors. Ahrefs or Moz products.

However, Moz seemed to perform better when it came to pages with a higher profile profile.

Since this was just a small test, it is difficult to draw definite conclusions, but if we tend to differentiate it is that the

large link database of SEMrush does not automatically translate it with the appearance of additional link domains.

But it certainly gives a very comprehensive result group that is roughly comparable to its main competitors.

Back link checks

Another way to SEMrush backlinks is to do a “backlink check”. The main purpose of this operation is to determine

the “toxicity” of backlinks to your site and to determine the “health of your site.”

When checking the backlink, SEMrush compiles a list of links that are considered spam, which you can then view

and upload to Google as a “renegade” file. This effectively instructs Google to ignore these toxic links, and because

search rankings.

(Keep in mind, however, that you need to be very careful when rejecting links – read Google’s guidelines on the

subject before doing so!)

Finally, the SEMrush backlink verification tool is a very strong feature of the product. It is very effective in detecting

low quality links and allows you to prepare a rejected file very easily for upload to Google.

One of the key features of SEMrush is the link building tool.

As mentioned above, link building – the process of linking other sites to yours – is essential to the success of any SEO

project, as search engines tend to point to more links to it. higher positions in search results (as long as the links in

All of this goes beyond what SEMrush’s main competitors offer in the link building division; and this is probably the

strongest argument for using SEMrush on them.

Build broken links

Building broken links is a related and very important SEO tactic: it’s about finding a broken link (i.e. one that doesn’t

Interface and ease of use

The SEMrush interface, similar to competing products like Moz and Ahrefs, consists of a menu on the left that you

use to access functions on the right. Menu options are grouped into useful categories – competition research,

keyword research, link building, ranking, optimization and reporting.

You have to deal with a lot of data – it may seem overwhelming at first, but you will get used to it soon (and the point

of tools like SEMrush is to give you a lot of data).

Additionally, the visualization of the data provided by SEMrush overcomes the data overload – most of the predicted

metrics are presented in a way that makes the information much easier to understand.

However, it would be nice if the SEMrush interface would work better with mobile phones – as it is, it is not

“responsible”, which means if you log in to SEMrush on a mobile device, you will see the standard desktop interface,

which is very small text and very pinch and zoom.

Using SEMrush on a mobile phone requires a lot of tweeting and zooming

Price-performance ratio

Compared to other types of SaaS applications (software as a service), optimization tools like SEMrush are expensive.

However, this is understandable because it pays not only for functionality, but also for access to a very large amount

of data, including the intelligence of competitors.

SEMRush offers 3 pricing plans:

Pro: USD 99.95 per month

Guru: USD 199.95 per month

Business: 399.95 USD per month

A free trial is also available – the standard version is 7 days, but an extended version of 14 days is available here for a

Comparing the free trial with what the competition offers is better than the Ahrefs offer (7-day paid trial), but less

generous than Moses (30-day free trial). You need to provide your credit card information for the trial period, which

– although it is a fairly common practice with SEO tools – is a bit of a hassle.

The above interest rates are highly comparable to the prices charged by its main competitors, Moz, Ahrefs and

Majestic (i.e., Majestic offers a lower monthly $ 49 plan, but is significantly less functional than its competitors).

If this is a problem for your organization, you should consider a business plan with SEMrush that will allow you to

negotiate prices for the solution.

Projects

It is important to be aware that the site review and link building features can only be used on domains added as

“projects” in SEMrush.

How many projects you can take on the go depends on what SEMrush plan you’re working on, but a $ 99 monthly

entry plan just makes it easier.

This limitation doesn’t necessarily have to be an indicator for every business, but if you have multiple pages that

need to handle SEO at once, or do a lot of competitor analysis, you need to know about it.

SEO tools such as SEMrush are quite complex in nature, so the availability and format of customer service is a key

The good news is that with SEMrush you get three customer service channels: phone, email and chat. This is a

positive contrast to competing products, not all of them offer phone support (Moz doesn’t even offer live chat

support).

An improvement here is to improve the visibility of the “contact support” options – you have to scroll down to find

the right details (would it be better if the floating box “suggested” instead of “needed” technical support?).

But to be fair about SEMrush, at least the footer contains a prominent phone number and email address, and

otherwise.

Overall, SEMrush is a really solid SEO tool that gives you all the key data you need for a successful SEO project.
